Best indoor plants for purifying the air in your home

Breathe pure oxygen at home

The dirty air that circulates in our homes is one of the main causes of various diseases and allergies. Different types of bacteria, mould, dust and carbon dioxide pollute the air around us. Toxins are found in plastics, toys, carpets, upholstered furniture, cleaning detergents and even in the building materials.
Fortunately, nature has found a way to keep the air clean- some plants naturally can purify the air. This is very important when windows are rarely opened, especially in the colder months of the year and the air in your home is becoming increasingly stifled. The solution for this problem is having one of these air purifying plants.

Great indoor plants that clean the air better than any device that you can buy

Indoor plants are a necessary component of any home décor. Besides enjoying the eyes, they bring in it more freshness, comfort, and beauty. The indoor plants can help you get more oxygen and get rid of some chemicals and toxins like formaldehyde, ammonia, trichloroethylene, benzene. Thankfully, you can always rely on indoor plants as they are the best air cleaning agents you can have at your home or in the office – and as a result, will breathe easier.

Orchid Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids)

These plants are not pretentious for fledging and they are really beautiful décor for any home or office. You can find them in different colours and definitely are my favourite ones. Same like the Dracaena, the Orchid Phalaenopsis might be toxic to home pets, so have this in mind.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a plant for all occasions. Can heal burns and colds, but also purifies the air perfectly. An Aloe Vera plant can refresh every small apartment. Effectively removes toxins from the indoor air too.

Chrysanthemum (Gold flower)

As per the NASA Air Clean Study, they have been shown as a plant that reduces the indoor pollution of the air. Beautiful and inexpensive they can be planted in your garden too. Also, Chrysanthemums are very popular just because they have a wealth of meaning associated with them.

Spathiphyllum (Peace Lilly)

It is an extremely beautiful flower and really hard to kill. Basically, it blooms in the summer, it prefers shady places, moist (though not wet) soil.

Ficus elastica (Rubber plant)

The rubber plant is one of the most popular houseplants. It looks beautiful and at the same time very simple, without interfering with the interior in any home. Moreover, it is not pretentious to living conditions. If you put it in a large pot and let it grow, can achieve truly impressive dimensions. In general, however, the height is approximately 60 to 120 cm. In spring and summer, you can leave it outdoors. Another famous indoor Ficus tree is the Benjamin.

Chlorophytum (Spider plant)

Chlorophytum is the best option for those who do not have enough free time and always forget to water the flowers. From the point of care, this plant is not very demanding and absorbs all spraying chemicals used while cleaning the house

Dracaena (Dragon tree)

There are more than 40 species of this plant, so you will definitely have a choice. The Dracaena is a great plant for cleansing the air of different toxins. However, you should keep in mind that is toxic to cats and dogs, so it’s not a good idea if you live in an apartment with pets.

Nephrolepis (Fern)

This fern likes moist areas and reflected light. The bathroom is the perfect place for it.

Sansevieria (Mother-in-law’s tongue)

This plant can be seen everywhere, especially in offices and restaurants. Why? Just because doesn’t require any specific care. It should be watered once a month, likes dry air and little sunlight. According to NASA Air Clean Study, along with other plants, it is proven that Sansevieria is capable of purifying the air from toxins.

Chamaedorea (parlour palm)

This palm is ideal for busy people. While the Ivy needs constant attention and care, especially in the winter, Chamaedorea has very low operating cost and only needs a lot of sunlight. Better put it on the windowsill to have sufficient access to sunlight. It can grow to three meters in height and looks great.

Hedera (Ivy)

Ivy comes in different forms and it is an excellent helper for purifying the air. You can have it either in a pot or outside in the garden. One of the most popular types is the English ivy which is an evergreen climbing plant on surfaces like trees, walls, cliffs. It can be found as a ground cover too.

Thank you for your kind comment. You can actually get any type of flower-small or a large one or even a tree. Anything that can fit perfectly in your house or apartment. It all depends on your taste, home decor and how much spare time you have. Honestly, I have plenty of Orchids, Dracaena and Benjamin trees – they are all easy to grow and a beautiful decor 🙂
