Make It Shine, Make It Last: Bathroom Cleaning That Delivers Benefits

Cleaning your bathroom might not be the most exciting thing to do, but it’s important if you want your bathroom to last longer. Regular upkeep helps prevent damage from mould, limescale, and moisture build-up — all of which can wear down your bathroom overtime.

If you have the right tools and a plan in mind, you can change your bathroom from looking unclean to sparkling in no time. This article explores how important it is to clean your bathroom, but also provides some tips to help you get the job done.

Why You Should Clean Regularly

Upkeep Hygiene: There are many places in the bathroom that several people come into contact with, such as the light switch, toilet chain and taps. Warm temperatures, along with a moist environment, can cause bacteria to accumulate.

Prevents Mould: Mould can be a nightmare to deal with; once it grows, it can be difficult to get rid of.

Prevents Permanent Staining: Hard water and soap scum can build up overtime and if it’s not dealt with it can lead to more permanent stains. These can make the bathroom look dirty even if it’s just been cleaned.

Allows You To Relax: Many people use a warm shower or a long, soapy bath to unwind after a stressful day. A dirty bathroom can make it more difficult to relax and enjoy downtime.

Fixtures and Fittings

Residue from soap, toothpaste and water can leave your sink looking unclean and create unpleasant smells. This can also lead to a limescale build-up which can reduce the life of your fixtures. Wiping your sink down every day can remove this residue to keep your bathroom feeling fresh, and occasionally using a descaling detergent will make it look brand new.

If you’re trying to get rid of any stubborn stains on fixtures, you can make a solution of equal parts water and vinegar, place it on a cloth then scrub. It’s always best to test on a hidden area first before you use any new cleaning solutions, just to make sure it’s suitable.

Drains

You don’t need to wait until your sink or shower is completely blocked to take action – regular cleaning can help you avoid needing a plumber altogether. Hair, soap scum, and debris build up quickly, especially in busy households.

One popular method for sink and shower drains is to use white vinegar and baking soda, but try and remove as much debris as you can see first. It will fizz and bubble, then after ten minutes flush it down with water. It’s a popular method as people try to avoid using harsh drain cleaners as it can damage pipes over time.

Here’s the measurements for the drain cleaning solution:

  • 120g of baking soda
  • 250ml of water
  • 250ml of white vinegar
  • Boiling water for before and after to soften the debris

Bathroom Walls

It’s a good idea to clean your wall tiles at least once a week to maintain their appearance, remove grime (especially from the grout), prevent stains, and stop damage from occurring. There are a few popular methods for cleaning wall tiles, including baking soda mixture (baking soda is a popular method if you couldn’t tell!), mixing warm water with washing up liquid, and some people even use a flat mop with cleaning solution for their fully tiled bathroom. Bathrooms are prone to mould, and this is not an exception for the tiles, so regular cleaning is recommended.

Some people choose to install PVC wall panels because they’re lower maintenance, cheaper, and easier to install. Due to their non-porous nature, it means they are waterproof and resistant to mould and mildew. They also don’t have grout lines, so it makes for an easier, smoother clean. The best way to clean wall panels is to wipe them with warm water and washing-up liquid.

Avoid using any harsh chemicals, abrasive materials, or rough scrubbing on panels and tiles as it can damage them.

Extractors Fans

Extractor fans are essential for removing moisture and keeping your bathroom well ventilated. Without airflow, over time those warm showers and baths can lead to mould, damp, and even long term damage to your walls and ceilings, which can be a costly repair. Cleaning it once every six months is a good time frame to keep your extractor fan working to its full potential.

How to clean your extractor fan:

  1. Begin by switching off the power to the fan to ensure safety.
  2. Next, remove the fan cover and gently wipe away dust and dirt using a soft cloth, a hoover attachment, or a small brush.
  3. Soak the cover in warm, soapy water, give it a good scrub, and make sure it’s completely dry before reattaching.
  4. Finally, check that the fan blades are free from dust build-up, if needed, give them a wipe too.

Toilet

Similar to taps, toilets also suffer from limescale build-up up which can be quite unsightly. Regular cleaning can help prevent this, and fix any valves or flappers that are defective. The way to tell if they aren’t working properly is if water is continuously dripping into the toilet bowl; it’s a perfect environment for limescale build-up.

For a regular clean, bleach and a scrub with a brush will do the job. For tougher limescale, pour in white vinegar or a limescale remover, leave it to sit overnight, then scrub away in the morning.

Mirror

By having a shiny mirror, your bathroom can appear more spacious. Mirrors can get dusty and dirty quickly, especially one in the bathroom, which is why it’s a good idea to clean it at least once a week.

You don’t need to use any harsh chemicals when it comes to cleaning mirrors, sometimes this can actually leave your mirror more streaky than it was before. All you have to use is a wet microfiber cloth and buff it with a dry microfiber cloth afterwards.
